hoorah

The man and I went to Las Vegas this past weekend - not for gambling and crazy times, but to see family and attend a ball. Yes, that's right - a ball. The Marine Corps Ball to be exact. It was the 230th birthday of the USMC, and my dad was named a guest of honor at the Las Vegas ball. Exciting! It was the first time the man got to see the General all dressed up and in his true element. Dad was like a mini-celebrity. I was so proud of him.

Boy are those guys crazy about celebrating their birthday. No matter where Marines are stationed all across the globe, they stop and commemorate the Marine Corps birthday. What softies.

If you ever get to attend one of the formal celebrations, then the following is the likely flow of events: Silent drill teams, the cake-cutting ceremony, speeches, dinner, then dancing. The cake-cutting ceremony involves cutting a huge birthday cake with a sword (of course), then the oldest Marine present receives the first slice, followed by the youngest Marine.

I had a blast. Got to visit with family and get all dressed up. A real treat.
