brick a brack

The man and I saw Brick this past weekend and boy did we like it. Highly recommend it. A new breed of film noire - follows some of the old rules, sets the story in a place we haven't seen film noire before, high school. So good I think I developed a little crush on the main character Brendan, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt of 3rd Rock From the Sun fame. Or perhaps more importantly from 10 Things I Hate About You, which by the way, I'm confessing I own. Fire away.

We also watched Gus Van Sant's Last Days. We don't recommend that. Well, we do if you're looking for a supremely dull film with high aspirations that bores the hell out of you. Gus, what happened buddy? Why would you do that to us? Let me say this: The lead actor's (intended) resemblance to Kurt Cobain was at times uncanny - good job there - but the story was flatter than flat. It was a purgatory of sorts trying to make it to the end. Even the Thurston Moore driven soundtrack doesn't redeem this movie for me.

What do both of these movies have in common? Mr. Lukas Haas. Making a comeback, looks like.
